A young female student of anatomy, Lam, on her first day in the dissection room, encounters a cadaver of a young woman which for administrative reasons is taken away. Several months later she is given a head to dissect, and recognises who must have been the head's former owner. Initial interest is purely anthropological, but soon becomes forensic when the possibility of unnatural death is raised. The police do not follow this through, and Lam determines, despite threat of career ruination, she must pursue an investigation herself. Ultimately her efforts are rewarded by the forensic conclusions.

"Strong story and refreshing, realistic sex scenes" 2009-08-28
By C.T. Anchor (Texas)
Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:

- The sex scenes are terrific. Graphic but not overly long or descriptive, realistic, wordless. I haven't read many erotic novels in which the characters don't speak during sex, but in my experience, that's just as common--if not more so--than sex that's littered with dialogue.

- I love that Trent takes so many pictures. He's a photographer, so obviously he WOULD do that, but he doesn't take only artsy, "good" photos. He also uses them as tangible reminders of specific moments, even painful ones.

- There are moments of really vivid imagery and introspection throughout the book: Trent watches the developing solution running off of a photo in the red darkroom light and compares it laughingly to "the open wounds of the tortured artist"; he thinks of a picture taken as a reminder rather than as a piece of art "the same way a poet would write his shopping list"; etc.

- Several of the supporting characters are sweet and endearing.

- The ending is predictable, but it's nice. Neither rushed nor overly saccharine.

CONS:

- Some of the writing, especially toward the beginning, is redundant and/or unnecessary. There's a section on page 4, for instance, that goes like this: "Both Rodney and Dan were still mechanics. They both still lived in Glen Mills. But they were not still friends." All of this information is revealed elsewhere (some of it before these sentences appear), and none of it is necessary here. I didn't notice this problem near as much further into the book, though.

- Glaring copy editing issues start to occur more and more frequently as the book progresses. The most distracting examples are the complete lack of large initial letters at the beginning of some of the chapters and some words that are just inexplicably incomplete. Here's an example: "I think the power should be back on at a e garage by now." I'm not sure how something like that might have happened, but a couple of times, the missing/partial word is difficult to figure out, even using context clues from the rest of the sentence.

Overall comments: I really enjoyed this book. I wouldn't call it a page-turner, necessarily, but I was curious as to how the authors would fit all the puzzle pieces together at the end. And I'm not at all criticizing the female authors who write m/m novels, but it's really refreshing to read one by men every now and then.

"SPARE PARTS by Scott & Scott - 4.5 Stars" 2008-04-28
By JenB (USA)
This is a great M/M romance. I previously read Razor Burn: A Romentics Novel (Romentics Novels) by Scott & Scott and loved it, so I was expecting a similar story in SPARE PARTS. SPARE PARTS, however, is a much lighter story with less danger and more romance.

SPARE PARTS reminds me of some of my favorite contemporary M/F romances. The plot is formulaic (which is not a negative characteristic at all), and the story is character driven, centered around the relationship between the two main characters. Most of the conflict is internal. Elements of external conflict are secondary to the romance, and are not as important as the development of the relationship. The "bad guy" in this type of romance is usually somewhat exaggerated, and his defeat is uncomplicated. The resolution is usually rather simple and idealistic. The element that makes this type of romance unique is the character development, and that is where Scott (Whittier) & Scott (Pomfret) shine.

Trent and Dan are wonderful characters. Trent is a loving young man with realistic hopes and dreams, and a lot to offer his friends and his lover. He makes the best of every situation. Dan is a strong, successful man who learned from his youthful mistakes and now keeps his personal life to himself. Both men have perfectly understandable reasons for keeping secrets.

This story centers around The Big Misunderstanding, a plot device I usually try to avoid in romance. However, in SPARE PARTS, the authors are able to make this plot device work without irritating the reader or insulting the reader's intelligence. I did wish that the two men would be more honest with each other, but I never found myself gritting my teeth and swearing at the characters like I have done while reading other romances with The Big Misunderstanding.

The "Bad Guy" in this book is rather silly, but his "defeat" at the end of the book is really funny. The supporting characters in this book, though minor, are still memorable.

I love the garage scenes and Trent's photography scenes. They provide beautiful glimpses into the souls of two wonderful men. Did I mention that the sex in this book is panty-scorching H-O-T?

SPARE PARTS doesn't take itself too seriously, and I don't think it was meant to. It is a well-written feel-good story about two men in love. And what's better than a fairy tale with not just one, but *two* sexy Prince Charmings?

SPARE PARTS is a wonderful book by two very talented authors, and I highly recommend it for fans of sweet M/M romance with happy endings.

 "Very Sweet" 2008-02-24
By Amanda A. Adams (Texas)
Dan is a sucessful but lonley mechanic. He came out of the closet in what he feels like is past his prime and just doesn't fit into the club sence. One lonely night Dan finds himself at the river front boardwalk where he knows he can find company, for the right price, even as he is discusted with himself for sinking this low. But the pretty young thing he comes across isn't what he seems. Trent is a young artist hoping for his big break and barely paying his bills. When his best friend talks him into hiting the clubs to try to cheer him up, Trent finds himself drunk and wondering down the boardwalk contaplating crossing the line and earning enough money to get through the next week. These two guys end up together no knowing that they actually have a past. Trent finds himself in a daze living with Dan and working in one of his garages, which he's horrible at. Dan finds himself falling deeply in love but keeping a secret from Trent out of fear of hurting him. The emotions in this book are deep and loving. It's a really sweet romance story but some might get a little bored with it. There's no dramatic plot or any suspense. Just a simple story of two lost souls finding love, and that worked just fine for me. I'm a big fan of Scott&Scott and will read anything they write, but my favorite is Razor Burn.

"Spare Parts (A Romentics Novel) by Scott & Scott" 2007-11-22
By Elisa (Italy)
I read in the introduction: A Novel Approach to Gay Romance. Introducing a line of romance novels written just for gay men...

and I add: and women who like to read about men in love!

Lately I have read a lot of books or ebooks about manlove written by men: William Maltese, Bobby Michaels, Josh Lanyon, Matthew Haldeman-Time. I have to said that I like them all. I like their style, even if it's very different one from the other, and I ike their way to approach love between men. It's not true that romance is woman. Also men can love deeply and suffer the pain of love.

In Spare Parts, Dan is a 35 years old mechanics. He has had an hard life but now, he has managed to own six garages all around a little province town and life seems to go well. But a former friend is very jelaous of his success and begins to gossip about him: Dan is gay, he employes only young men (underage men), he is not a good mechanics... All false except the first thing: Dan is gay but he is also very lonely. So when he meets Trent, and mistakens him for an hooker, he hopes to have found a soul to share his life and if he can make something good for Trent giving him a chance to change his life... But Trent is not a hooker, he is only a young men (27 years old) with some money problems and a wanna-to-be photographer.

The story is pretty simple, but very well written. Even if there aren't unexpected twist and the story flows smoothly through a happily ever after ending, it's a very relaxing and enjoyable reading. It's very "romentic" indeed.

I finds strange the continuing underlying of the age difference between Dan and Trent. Eight years old is not so much in our age (never been I think) and if it is between a 27 years old and a 35 years old is highly acceptable. But maybe this id due to the fact that Dan is described as an "old" character, a man who has reached a moment in his life where he has to take some final decision. 35 years old!!! Help!!! I have only two years to spend in happiness and careless life?!? Joke apart, I like the interaction between the two.

Dan is a very good man. He is strong and caring. A man you'd like to have at your side (man or woman). He is also handsome and very physical in his love. Trent instead is still a wanna-to-be man. Maybe he is out from a troubled youth, and not having a father, but only a mother, has made him a bit spoilt, but not a nasty person. I think he is happy to lean on someone else. He need a fatherly figure in his life. And so here we have the relationship between the two: a man grown old too soon, and another man not enough grown. A perfect match.

This is the second book I read by Scott & Scott but I think not the last...

Rachel was cursed. She was sure of it. She always seemed to get the fruitcake neighbours. No matter where she went, they were always the same: selfish and inconsiderate people who had no respect for anyone else. And she was sure her last one had been the worst of all: rude and obnoxious, fond of loud music and endless parties, he'd made her life a living hell. Once he disappeared, she was certain that nobody would ever be that bad again.

But she was wrong.

After two months of peace, a new tenant is moving in next door and Rachel is about to discover just how bad a neighbour can be. Because even though her new neighbour is supposed to be starting a fresh life. Even though he is planning to take the pills just like the doctor told him to... Ben Fowler has a Red Room in his mind. A special, secret place he built where he can take revenge on the lady responsible for the horrors of his childhood.

It's just unfortunate that Rachel looks exactly like her... And that a neighbourly gesture of good will years earlier could provide Ben with all the temptation he needs to slip back into his old habits.

The debut novella by R. Frederick Hamilton is a graphic and disturbing story of urban horror that is not for the faint of heart. Included in the volume are two short stories guaranteed to leave a bad taste in your mouth. The Filmmakers: a horrific portrayal of teens degenerating into sadism, and Writer's Block: a surreal trip into the world of a boy held captive by his body-building mother.

 "up-chuck 'n' over-the-top from the land down under" 2009-06-30
By Jason Wuchenich (Sacramento, CA United States)
Ben just got out of the loony bin and moved into a hideous lime-green apartment. The lime green perhaps an attempt to subdue the encroaching red. He needed his pills, especially with the pretty neighbor next door, Rachel. Rachel has had her share of wack-job neighbors and naturally is apprehensive about this one as well - and for good reason.

The story takes you into the depths of psychosis, obsession, deranged fantasy, and finally relief...but not the kind you would expect. "Spare Key" spares no detail on the depravities taking place. The book also includes two shorter stories - "The Filmmakers" and "Writer's Block" - both fun reads, almost like icky aftershocks from the main story.

It's gooey, warped and will leave you feeling sticky. Now buy it and shower.

"An exhilerating trip through hell" 2009-06-30
By The Lamp
It's hard to assess a book like `Spare Key' without addressing the intensely graphic and disturbing nature of the content. Up front I'd have to say that this isn't for everyone. Most people of sound mind would actively seek to avoid such content and I certainly wouldn't blame them. The word that keeps popping up again and again while reading `Spare Key' is `disturbing'. The graphic (often sexualized) violence is gut churning and the taste left in your mouth afterward is foul.

So why read this book? Simply put, `Spare Key' is a wonderfully realized story that completely reverberates within you. It's not often that I have such a visceral reaction to a book. The story itself follows a fairly standard formula and concerns a mentally disturbed man named Ben who is released from care earlier than advisable. He moves next door to a seemingly "average" woman named Rachel. Ben soon proceeds to form an obsession with Rachel who, according to his warped mind, looks just like the mother who abused him during childhood. Ben has concocted a "red room" in his mind wherein he performs the most vulgar acts of violence upon facsimiles of his childhood tormentor. Rachel is the perfect facsimile.

Using this framework, R. Frederick Hamilton proceeds to decimate everything in his path with the raw power of his disturbing prose. I winced on numerous occasions throughout.

This book is topped off with two short stories that if anything, leave an even more unpleasant taste. The first of these, `The Filmmakers' may rate as the most unpleasant story I've ever read. It's a story about a group of teens who (as the product description says) "degenerate into sadism" and an omnipotent being who watches over the teens as they perform their vile acts. There's no reason to linger on the details of the sadism, suffice to say it involves snuff-like home movies starring local children. I read a review of this book recently that wrote this story off as exploitation but I think that's a little too simplistic. This story is a (much) more extreme version of events that occur daily thanks to the ubiquity of recording devices and bored teens. Just check youtube and you'll be bombarded with footage of teens terrorizing people for the camera. If anything, `The Filmmakers' is a statement against a genuine problem that exists today.

The final story here is `Writer's Block' which is a supremely surreal, uncomfortable story about a son held hostage by his bodybuilding mother. The mother is convinced her son will write a masterpiece and the torment she hurls his way is just a part of the process. `Writer's Block' is about as unpleasant as a story concerning a mother kidnapping her own son should be. There is something pathetically amusing about the narrator's plight and it's certainly nice to get a reprieve from the sickening events of the earlier stories.

All in all, `Spare Key; is highly recommended for fans of extreme fiction. However, there's a strong warning: it's not a nice book; it's not a happy book. Quite simply put, It's sickening. Proceed with caution.

 "Disturbingly brilliant!" 2009-03-14
By Romana Vora
I hadn't heard of this book before a couple of weeks ago. I was lucky enough to accompany a friend to a local signing where I got the meet the author behind Spare Key.

First thing's first; this book is a nasty piece of work in the best possible way! Many scenes leave you wanting to take a shower but for whatever reason, you're unable to put the devious thing down. I walked away as sickened as I was exhilarated.

Also of note are the two short stories that close this book out. 'The Filmmakers' is repulsively brilliant. Then there's 'Writer's Block', which enters into the realm of the surreal. A kid's kept hostage by his body building mother for christsake!

Spare Key is an amazingly written and conceived slab of true horror for anyone who prefers their fiction especially nasty. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for any future books by R. Frederick Hamilton. Highest recommendation.

this book covers most repairs for older washers.

It does NOT deal with front loading washers.

I guess some repairs are similar whether it's for a top or front loading like pump or motor.

Also: washers tend to have more and more electronics which is not covered in this book.

Get it used, it's still a good start.

A well-written and easy to read and understand manual. He covers common problems for all washers, then breaks everything down by manufacturers, telling you the most common problems each individual brand of washer usually has. The manual also lets you know what is and isn't usually worth the money and trouble to repair. Douglas Emley wrote the manual assuming you haven't worked in appliance repair all your life. For me, the book was well worth the money.

I flipped through this book for five minutes, then threw it in the trash. It's old, has poor diagrams, and is simple a waste of money. Sears sells a book on dryer repair, which you can usually find at their Parts department. It can be used for any brand, not just Kenmore. I was able to give my dryer a complete tuneup using that book.

Peter Rutland analyzes the role played by regional and local organs of the Soviet Communist Party in economic management from 1970 to 1989. Using a range of Soviet political and economic journals, newspapers and academic publications, he examines Communist Party economic interventions in construction, energy, transport, consumer goods, and agriculture. He convincingly argues that party interventions hindered rather than assisted the search for efficiency in the Soviet economy and represent a major obstacle to the current economic reform movement.

A Review

Great front art work. The back cover tells the story simply enough. "Evil has a new archenemy." Michael Sortino, an accomplished screen writer, has a new offering as an author. Inspired by his own rambunctious eleven year old, Mr. Sortino has written a delightful adventure story of Theodore (don't call me Teddy) Gyros. The author is right on target with a story that will interest his preteen audience while teaching them the origins of the evil that can poison relationships.

Reading is believing. Get a copy yourself and read it for the fun of it as I did. Then pass it along to your ten year old and his teacher.

By Thomas G. Briggs (Marco Island, FL)
I met David Jebb in 9th grade. We were neighbors and surfing pals. As is too often the case, we lost touch until recently when we reconnected at the glider port in San Diego - we guessed it had been 40 years. We talked of old friends, too many no longer with us. David kindly presented me with an autographed copy of his book and said this would give me an idea of what he was doing for part of those 40 years.

I started reading on the plane trip home and finished the next day. It is a real page turner and projects insights into David's life, thoughts, questions and his journey. And what a journey it was! It is well written, concise and flows beautifully. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I am looking forward to his next book and staying connected with David.

 "A roaring road trip of self-discovery!" 2007-11-11
By M. D. Jebb (Tuebingen, GERMANY)
The character Blue starts the tale of The Thirteenth Time Zone off with a bang. No literally - the familiar "bang-bang" of cops vs. crooks. You get to take a pause from the constant adventures of street officer Owen "Blue" Drew only after 50 or so pages into the book. At this point he begins his transformation from "street officer" into "peace officer." He leaves the force and sets off into the world - and what a world is waiting for him!

In reading this novel I found myself flying through the cop stuff (just not my thing, really) in order to get to the juicy "big picture" of the narrative - the search for self-discovery and the lessons learned in traveling. One of David's great strengths as a writer were his unique metaphors used throughout the book. Here are just a few that I relished:

"The Eros crashed ahead, taking on wave after wave and throwing back spray that hit my face like the snapping mane of a running horse." (P. 89)

"The problem was that every time the Eros fell on her side, bilge water gushed all over the galley. Paper plates and foam cups drifted around me like mocking reminders of what floating was supposed to mean." (P. 96)

"I closed my eyes and swayed back and forth like a cobra to the sound of the music." (P. 151)

Aside from his colorful descriptions of all that he sees and experiences in his spiritual quest, the novel is not without salacious sex scenes and sharp wit. Again, here are a few tidbits:

"Maybe it was the fact that she was offering herself to me the way someone might toss a Kleenex to a friend with a runny nose. Or perhaps it was the little detail of the boyfriend--but somehow, nothing felt right about this." (P. 134)

"I wondered what the brothers of the Benedictine Order would say about the idea of promiscuity as a path to Enlightenment." (P. 148)

I have no doubt that anyone who purchases this book will be done with it in one to two sittings because it is a true page-turner. Enjoy!

"So good, I read it twice" 2007-03-06
By Reader Views (Austin, Texas)
Reviewed by Joanne Benham for Reader Views (2/07)

San Diego police office Owen Drew considered his body as another piece of equipment to be used in the war against crime and he kept it in tip-top shape. This enabled him to perform his job superbly. His excellence did not go unnoticed by the upper echelon and one day after roll call, Drew was called into a private meeting with his captain, lieutenant and sergeant. After commending him on his arrest record, the captain asked him, "If you had the power to deal with the gangs in your sector, to handle them any way you like, what would you do?"

That question started one of the most exciting, and dangerous, times in Drew's life. Backed with the support of his superiors and fellow officers, with carte blanche to do what was necessary to clear out the gangs in San Diego's most crime-ridden streets, Drew launched his offensive, a modern day warrior, his horse a specially equipped Ford. Bypassing the street runners and middlemen, Drew set his sights on the leaders and the peddlers, figuring to break down their financial network and their leadership. Just how effectively he was doing his job was proved several months later when word was received that the gangs had pooled their money and placed a contract on Drew's head.

And all of this is only in the first fifty pages, setting us up for the real story being told, how a man of conscience, wanting only to do the best he can, to protect the weak and the underdog, can have his soul destroyed by the countless encounters with evil. So Drew takes a one-year sabbatical from the job, determined to find his lost soul, starting with a job as crewman on a sailing vessel. When the owner of the sailboat cuts the trip short, Drew continues his journey alone, hitchhiking and walking around the world, living in a commune, taking jobs as he finds them. The year's sabbatical stretches to two before Drew finally finds the inner peace he seeks at a small Swiss village and he realizes that his days as a San Diego police officer are over for good.

I really enjoyed "The Thirteenth Time Zone." In fact, I've even reread it. There are some minor typos that should be fixed, but not enough that they really bother you.

The definitive account of Germany's malign transformation under Hitler's total rule and the implacable march to war.

By the middle of 1933, the democracy of the Weimar Republic had been transformed into the police state of the Third Reich, mobilized around the cult of the leader, Adolf Hitler. If this could happen in less than a year, what would the future hold? Only the most fervent Nazi party loyalists would have predicted how radical the transformation ahead would be.

In The Third Reich in Power, Richard J. Evans tells the story of Germany's radical reshaping under Nazi rule. Every area of life, from literature, culture, and the arts to religion, education, and science, was subordinated to the relentless drive to prepare Germany for war. His book shows how the Nazis attempted to penetrate and reorder every aspect of German society, encountering many kinds and degrees of resistance along the way but gradually winning the acceptance of the German people in the long run.

Those who were seen as unfit to be counted among the German people were dealt with in increasingly brutal terms. The Nazi regime took more and more radical measures against the racially "unfit," including Germany's Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, mentally ill, "asocial" and "habitual" criminals. After six years of foreign policy brinkmanship that took the Nazi regime from success to success, Hitler's drive to prepare Germany for the war he saw as its destiny reached its fateful hour in September 1939. The war he unleashed was to plunge the world into a maelstrom of genocide and destruction. The Third Reich in Power is the fullest and most authoritative account yet written of how, in six years, Germany was brought to the edge of that terrible abyss.

"Nivea, Salamander and Volkswagen - not a happy reading" 2009-09-08
By Grettir Strong
The book is not as dynamic and fascinating as the last book of the trilogy but nevertheless extremely interesting and quite comprehensive. Pretty much all imaginable sides of life in Germany under matured Third Reich are dissected in variety of ways and exposed under different angles of view. Author does his best to stay impartial in his narrative although it is clear that it is not that easy for him to do. Third Reich political system is shown as a tough regime that grows more and more radical, slipping to extreme brutalization towards its own citizens and, eventually, to war.

There are many aspects of that epoch that are relatively well known. Persecution of certain minorities as well as such large scale actions as Night of the Long Knives or Night of Broken Glass would sound familiar (even if vaguely) to many. But Mr. Evans goes much further - he explores less known corners of life then - artistic and literary life, education (both higher and regular), religion and economy. It gets clear that hardly anything was left untouched - even such seemingly other-worldly spheres as mathematics experienced intrusion. Mr. Evans writes that there was an attempt to create some true "German mathematics", which stressed geometry rather than algebra. Somehow geometry, he writes (page 309), "was supposedly more closely related to the ideal human form as expressed in the Aryan racial type". It is not that easy to see how mathematical disciplines other that geometry can be less (or more) related to that ideal, moreover geometry itself (except for maybe elementary one) deals with matters that are so far away from human form in its level of abstraction that it may be possible that whoever was trying to reshape mathematics under Third Reich did not have mathematical education. Another aspect of that reshaping was so-called Aryanization - that phenomenon took place everywhere, but especially in education and economy. Quite eloquent testimony of consequences of that phenomenon at one of the best in the world research facilities can be seen in the dialog between David Hilbert, prominent German mathematician, and Bernhard Rust, Nazi Minister of Education sometime in 1934. Rust asked, "How is mathematics in Göttingen now that it has been freed of the Jewish influence?" Hilbert replied, "Mathematics in Göttingen? There is really none any more." (quoted from Wikipedia).

Interestingly enough, some consumer brands well known today, as Mr. Evans shows, have stamp of Aryanization in their history, namely cosmetic products of Nivea and shoes Salamander. Story of Voklswagen is more complex. Reportedly Adolf Hitler was involved personally in design of a certain model as the book says. What really surprised me is that Volkswagen was in fact available to German consumers and many did own it in 1930s. Viktor Klemperer, whose diaries are frequently quoted across the book, had one and had driven often German famous autobahns in it.

Overall though, the book is not a happy reading. All social innovations by the regime, introduced by Nazi ideology, made lives of many either hard or unbelievably hard with great deal plunged into destitution, forced to flee the country or perished in concentration camps, prisons, or series of pogroms. Each time I look at my neighbor's Golf, I can't help but think about Viktor Klemperer and his rides in his Volkswagen across German countryside shortly before racial policies culminated in Nuremberg Laws that shuttered his life so completely. Mr. Evans' book does a good job in description of that era and generating reflection but one question after the book is finished is left unanswered in its entirety - what should be done to prevent repetition of that episode of the human history? Chances are many readers will formulate that question for themselves and it is very probable that the answer is a very complex one.

 "Germany- Toward the Abyss" 2009-06-25
By Cody Carlson (Salt Lake City, UT United States)
The second volume in Richard J. Evans Third Reich trilogy matches the first for breathtaking scope, attention to detail and truly fine writing. Evans successfully illustrates how the Nazi process of Gleichschaltung (coordination) allowed fascism to permeated every facet of German life. Propaganda, police terror, the Nazi war on the churches, the creation of the racial state, and the preparation for world war are all addressed in all their horrific wonder by the author. This is another important book in the pantheon of Third Reich histories and will no doubt educate the curious for years to come.

 "Evans' opus continues..." 2009-05-27
By Ronald Iden (Tennessee)
The Evans' trilogy on the Third Reich is comprehensive and may well become the definitive general history of that period. An excellent bibliography for more detailed reading, too. With his public works projects and national work camps helping bring Germany out of the depression, you can readily see why Hitler was supported by much of the German populace. There are some frightening comparisons with the Obama administration's socialists tendencies in the latter's actions today.

"The Third Reich in Power" 2009-04-22
By Allen Smalling (Chicago, IL United States)
THE THIRD REICH IN POWER is the middle of historian Richard J. Evans' trilogy of life and politics under the Nazis (the first deals with their rise to power and the new final volume the experience of war). It is Evans' stated attempt to steer a middle course between dry and highly specialized academic texts on the one hand, and excessively popular (and increasingly outdated) works on the other, and in that it succeeds brilliantly IMHO. I have a major in German studies but was looking for social as well as political history and came away with enhanced knowledge of some aspects of Germany in the Thirties (the inexorable spread of anti-Semitism) and brand-new and fascinating knowledge of others (did you know Hitler had a hand in designing the Autobahns?).

In fact, this book explicitly makes the day-to-day life of average Germans important; not mere nuggets but information and narrative that give the reader an excellent overview. For instance, one wide-ranging program, called "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through Joy) did everything from build resort hotels and offer cheap rates to (Nazi-approved) groups, to opening up a lay-away program for the newly developed Volkswagen(a plan cut short by war).

And speaking of war, it is impossible not to agree that Hitler started war planning from his first day in office. As medievalist-turned-mystery writer Dorothy Sayers once remarked, the only shock in his annexing the Sudentenland (Bohemia) and perpetuating even worse atrocities is not that Hitler didn't make it quite clear what he intended to do -- it's just that the western democracies chose not to believe him. I highly recommend THE THIRD REICH IN POWER. Whether you read it in hardcover or in paperback, you'll probably want to hang onto this work for a long time to come.

"Powerful description of THE Evil Empire." 2009-04-19
By Dale P. Henken (Coquille, Oregon)
I had read about the Third Reich but mainly through biographies of Hitler & other histories of the Second World War. Most of these concentrated on Hitler's foreign policies & his war making.

Evans, in his second volume of this large history, has given me a priceless look inside the Third Reich & how the Nazi's took over all aspects of daily life in Germany & how they reordered German society in their image through "co-ordination". I never realized how complete the transformation (or the revolution) of Germany was until Evan's painted this stark portrait. It is a chilling tale.

Now I finally have the answer to a question I have always had. Why was there no organized opposition to Hitler & the Nazis? The establishment of the police state was so thorough & so severe any opposition was quashed. But beyond the repression was the transformation of German society & it was complete.

One of the better vignettes in the book answered another question I had. Why were the Jehovah's Witnesses prosecuted by the Nazis & sent to concentration camps. How could this harmless, little sect be any threat to the might of Third Reich? The answer is actually the key to understanding the basic philosophy of that Third Reich. To know the answer you must read the book.

The book is tough sledding. There is a lot of information & some statistics. It is not necessarily a fun history to read. There is a lot of detail about a lot of different aspects of German life from religion to work to the arts but there must be so much in order for Evan's to paint this picture.

Evan's The Third Reich In Power is the definitive look at the Third Reich for this generation & a long time to come. If you have any interest in the modern history of Germany then you owe it to yourself to read this series.

And the moral or the story is this: be careful who you elect. If they say they are for change then change you could get. But it could be more change than you ever suspected. The German people made a deal with the Devil and the thugs took over. It is a fable of the Twentieth Century for us in the Twenty First.
